Seems that is what Phil and Jerry were doing all the time. Each playing the same scales just in opposite directions, different modes, etc...that is how I do it when I jam with a Dead style guitar player. The layering of scales is a big part of what the GD did.

I remember an internet Q&A with Phil a long tiome ago, Mike Gordon asked him a long winded question about hyper-technical musical esoterica and asked Phil if he considered himself the originator of said playing style. Phils answer was priceless: You mean playing scales - no Beethoven came up with that.
